When it comes to duck hunting in Uruguay, few places rival the incredible experience offered at Closaway Outfitters’ San Jose Lodge. Nestled in the heart of the country’s prime hunting territory, San Jose Lodge provides an unmatched opportunity for wingshooting in Uruguay. With a diverse range of native and migratory waterfowl, this region has become a haven for a limited number of hunters seeking variety and challenge for ducks that have rarely seen a hunter.

One of the standout features of duck hunting at San Jose Lodge is the wide array of duck species found here. Subject to then current government regulations, each species offers a unique shooting experience, making every outing a new adventure. Let’s take a closer look at some of the common ducks of San Jose Lodge, highlighting their characteristics and what makes them prized targets for hunters and bird enthusiasts alike.

Rosy-billed Pochard (netta peposaca)

The Rosy-billed Pochard is perhaps the most iconic and coveted duck species in Uruguay. This “king of ducks” maintains the same status as the iconic US mallard. With its sticking rosy bill and glossy back plumage, it’s a standout among waterfowl. These powerful divers are known for their strong, direct flight and tendency to dive when threatened, adding an extra layer of difficulty to the hunt.

White-faced Whistling Duck (dendrocygna viduata)

Second only to the rosy bill in hunter desirability, the White-Face Whistling duck is a staple at San Jose Lodge. With their stark white faces and long necks, they stand out against the lush vegetation. These ducks are known for their high-pitched calls and extreme wariness to anything that looks out of order, making them the most difficult of the species to harvest. Their erratic flight and large group formations, combined with their timid behavior, add an extra layer of excitement to the hunt.

Brazilian Teal (amazonetta brasiliensis)

The Brazilian Teal is the most numerous species and readily discernable due to its striking coloration and lively behavior. Unlike many other species, both males and females share similar plumage, with earthly tones, vibrant wing markings and feet the color of a carrot. The Brazilian is the only “quacking” duck of the San Jose Lodge species. These ducks are known for their swift takeoffs and agile maneuvers.

Ringed Teal (callonetta leucophrys)

The Ringed Teal is one of the most distinctive and beautiful ducks you’ll encounter in Uruguay. Recognizable by it’s delicate size and striking plumage, the male sports a pinkish hue on its chest, complimented by a dark ring around its neck and vibrant green wing patches, with a distinctive white ring in flight. Like all of our teal species, these agile flyers have incredible speed and unpredictable flight patterns.

Silver Teal (spatula versicolor)

Rivaling the beauty of the ringing teal, this small beautifully marked duck with a distinct blue bill and speckled body is another show stopper. Their compact size and swift flight are always a crowd pleaser. Found in the Ranch’s waterways, they often fly in small flocks, darting unpredictably.

Yellow-Billed Teal (anas flavirostris)

This ubiquitous teal is similar to its cousin, the yellow billed pintail due to their commonly shared yellow bill. This teal is smaller than its cousin and slightly more agile. Their rapid wingbeats and tight flight patterns make them very fast-moving, slipping up on the blinds unaware. Their preference for open water and marshy areas makes them a common sight at San Jose Lodge.
